Olive oil helps reduce blood cholesterol

A single tablespoon of olive oil helps reduce cholesterol and increases antioxidants in the blood, according to a new study.

According to the report, adults who consumed 25 milliliters (ml) or about two tablespoons of olive oil daily for one week showed less oxidation of LDL “bad” or LDL, and higher blood concentrations of antioxidants, especially phenols. Antioxidants may help prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals, products of normal metabolic processes and can damage body tissues.

Previous studies showed that the oxidation of LDL cholesterol is associated with atherosclerosis, which in turn can lead to heart disease. The findings help explain the benefits to the heart of the Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil, fruits, vegetables and cereals, and low in saturated fat from meat. Read more…
